I'm an avid fan of Persona 5, and I'm currently enjoying a new run with Persona 5 Royal. I strongly believe that both aspiring game designers and storytellers should study Persona 5/R.
The reason is simple: it's a masterclass in game design, music, art direction, gameplay, level design, user interface, storytelling, and sound design. The brilliance of Persona 5 lies in its ability to build a cohesive narrative through every aspect of the game. Doing this is an amazing feat in the game development. The Persona Team says the following during the linked interview, and this illustrates my take above:
“Persona 5’s UI had a pop-punk aesthetic, so we used fast movements and gave it an aggressive feeling. In P3R, I imagined combining the beauty of the sea from Port Island and Yakushima in the game, with the protagonist’s “Sea of Souls.” Elements like the shimmer and gradation as if underwater, as well as the sparkle and reflection like glass, were consciously represented.”
Famitsu (famed Japanese publication) conducted an interview with Persona team art director: Tomohiro Kumagai, alongside director Takuya Yamaguchi and producer Ryota Niitsuma for the upcoming Persona 3 Remake. As per Persona Central, who translated the interview: “they discuss the development of Persona 3 Reload, specifically focusing on the user interface (UI) design. They also share several UI mock-ups from earlier in development.”.
I highly recommend reading that, as such a conversation between brilliant minds of the gaming industry isn’t often available in the open.
