Welcome to the second edition of Patch Notes, let’s get this bad boy going. (Apologies for the delay, I was travelling).
This edition will cover the week from 2nd to 8th September
What caught my attention this week
World of Warcraft’s 20th/Warcraft’s 30th Anniversary is going to be a banger. Watch the 12mins roundtable yourself. I am very excited about this.
Biggest news of the week
Concord is already dead: after a disastrous launch 2 weeks ago, PlayStation already canned their GaaS. Mindblowing how many millions have been burned on this trend-chasing venture.
Star Wars Outlaws has some nasty bugs, the team is aware and working around the clock to fix it. Oh, and Ubisoft stock reached a 10-year low, and it keeps tanking. I hurt for my ex-colleagues.
Baldur’s Gate 3, one of the biggest contenders for GOTY, just dropped its Patch 7.0 with tons of new content, and tweaks to classes as well.
Riot announced an adjustment to their local RP prices, due to inflation - and mostly people gaming the system, so hurting their profits, I guess.
The excellent Street Fighter 6 reached 4 million units sold. Capcom keeps delivering. Side note: I am amazed by their portfolio management these past few years, a masterclass.
Square Enix will shut down the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius on October 30th, 2024. The game was launched in 2016 and had an excellent run, kudos to the team. They also said that they would delete player accounts, AND NO WEB3 DOESN’T SOLVE THIS STOP IT.
Zynga exits web3 and sells Sugartown to… ex-Sugartown team members. This has been known since some time ago for us, web3 folks, but seeing coverage on a major gaming outlet is interesting. Guess that we made it?
The legendary co-creator of Wizardry, Andrew C. Greenberg passed away at the age of 67. This is such a sad news. His memory will live on as his work inspired a plethora of famous game devs, and IPs, most famously: Fire Emblem (among my fav of all time), Dragon Quest (same) and Final Fantasy.
Legendary producer from Capcom, Hideaki Itsuno has left Capcom. I am expecting him to create his studio backed by NetEase or Tencent.
Following the disastrous performance of GaaS (this seems to be a theme, huh) Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the developer behind it - Rocksteady - is laying off people. This is another note to add to the already horrendous year the gaming industry is facing in terms of lay-offs. Good luck to all the impacted people.
